Examining the book of Ephesians part 13

Examining the book of Ephesians part 13

Introduction.

a.                  We are going to examine Ephesians 5:24 –Ephesians 6:1-9
b.                  Subject this week:  Subject:  Husband, wives Children, parents, employees and employers
c.                   Obeying these verses will lead to
·        Success in marriage
·        Family success
·        Business success
·        Work satisfaction
d.                  They only work when practiced as a whole.  Success does not come by picking the verses we like and ignoring the rest.
e.                  For example

I.          Husband and wives
a.       Wives obey (please note these instruction were given to Christian men and women)
Eph 5:22  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Eph 5:23  For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
b.      But want to ignore
Eph 5:24  Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Eph 5:25  Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Eph 5:26  That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Eph 5:27  That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Eph 5:28  So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
Eph 5:29  For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
Eph 5:30  For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
Eph 5:31  For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
Eph 5:32  This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Eph 5:33  Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

II.      Parents and Children
Eph 6:1  Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Eph 6:2  Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
Eph 6:3  That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Eph 6:4  And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Ephesians 6 (Amplified Bible)
 1CHILDREN, OBEY your parents in the Lord [as His representatives], for this is just and right.
    2Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother--this is the first commandment with a promise--(A)
    3That all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.
    4Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord.

III.    Employees and employers

a.         though these verses refer to slave owners and salves we can still lean lessons from them
Eph 6:5  Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
Eph 6:6  Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
Eph 6:7  With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
Eph 6:8  Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.
Eph 6:9  And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

(Amplified Bible)
5Servants (slaves), be obedient to those who are your physical masters, having respect for them and eager concern to please them, in singleness of motive and with all your heart, as [service] to Christ [Himself]--
    6Not in the way of eye-service [as if they were watching you] and only to please men, but as servants (slaves) of Christ, doing the will of God heartily and with your whole soul;
    7Rendering service readily with goodwill, as to the Lord and not to men,
    8Knowing that for whatever good anyone does, he will receive his reward from the Lord, whether he is slave or free.
    9You masters, act on the same [principle] toward them and give up threatening and using violent and abusive words, knowing that He Who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no respect of persons (no partiality) with Him.

Examining the book of Ephesians part 12

Introduction

a.                   Recap
b.                  We in these teachings have examined
·        Leaned how the Church was in Ephesus was started
·        We look how that God chose his elect, those that are to be saved, from before the foundation of the world.
Eph 1:4  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
·        We looked at the condition of the sinner
Eph 2:1  And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Eph 2:2  Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Eph 2:3  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
·        We learned that salvation is 100% God and zero of man.
·        We also look at the mystery that was revealed the apostles.
c.                   Last we look at the Unity of the believers and the purpose of the five-fold ministry.
d.                  Now we go on to chapter 5.

I.                   The Life of the true believer (Reading Chapter 5)
  1. chapter 5 is a continuation of chapter 4
Eph 4:32  And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Eph 5:1  Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
Eph 5:2  And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
  1. Why is this in the Bible if we cannot looses our salvation.
  2. I believe in security of the believer
Joh 3:17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Joh 5:24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Joh 10:27  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Joh 10:28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Joh 10:29  My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

Rom 8:38  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Rom 8:39  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Php 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
Jud 1:24  Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

  1. However I am aware of the fact that not everyone that says they are saved is not saved.
1Jn 2:19  They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

Mat 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

a.                   So when we look at chapter 5 we see how are true Christian should be living.   God uses his word to save us, keep us from sin, to cleanse us, to cause us to grow, to increase our faith, and to instruct us.
  2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Word defined
2Ti 3:3  Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
whoremonger [háwr mung gər] (plural whoremongers) noun
offensive term: an offensive term used to refer to a sexually indiscriminate man, especially one who frequents prostitutes (archaic insult offensive)[1]

Examining the book of Ephesians part 11

Introduction
a.                  We have so far
·        Looked at how the church as Ephesus was founded
·        We look at election, predestination, the depravity of man, salvation by grace alone and the Gentiles being fellow heirs
b.                  Chapter 4.

I.          Walk Worthy
Eph 4:1  I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

a.                   This not talking about honour you ministerial calling.
b.                  It if referring to our character, our attitude and personality
2Ti 1:9  Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

1Pe 1:15  But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

Col 3:17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
c.                 In verse 2 . Paul explains what he means
Eph 4:2  With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love
Eph 4:2  with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
d.                 The reason that we are to do that is because we are one people
Eph 4:3  Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Eph 4:4  There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling
e.                 Paul’s application of truth of what he as taught in the last three chapters.
Eph 1:10  That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Eph 2:15  Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
Eph 2:16  And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

11.         Paul emphasis the oneness of the faith
Eph 4:4  There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
Eph 4:5  One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Eph 4:6  One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Eph 4:7  But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

As we look at this chapter we see the emphases is on unity

Examining the book of Ephesians part 10

Examining the book of Ephesians part 10

Introduction
a.                   As we have been studying the book of Ephesians we can make some logical conclusions according to what Paul had written
1.   God is Sovereign by that we mean
·        independent: self-governing and not ruled by any other
·        with complete power: having supreme authority or power
b.                  We can see from what we have studied that God is sovereign in all things including salvation, and he decides who he wants to save.
Eph 1:4  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
c.                   We conclude also from Paul’s writing that man’s total inability to save himself or even to choose to be saved.
d.                  Man is dead in sin, alienated from God and as gentiles we were cut of from the common wealth of Israel.
e.                   But because of the atonement manly the death and resurrection we are no longer excluded
Eph 2:12  That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
Eph 2:13  But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
Eph 2:14  For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
Eph 2:15  Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

f.                    Recap from last week
g.                   We looked at the dispensation of Grace, what the mystery is that was mentioned by Paul and now we stopped at Ephesians 3:9 and now continue

I.                 Paul mentions is ministry and his message (read Ephesians 3:8-21)
a.                   to make known the mystery verse 9
Eph 3:4  Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
Eph 3:5  Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
Eph 3:6  That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
h.                   in the old covenant was a difference between Jews and Gentiles when it came to salvation
Rom 10:12  For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Rom 10:13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

i.                    principalities and powers
Eph 3:10  To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
Eph 3:10 EMTV so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.
Eph 3:10 ISV  He did this so that now, through the church, the wisdom of God in all its variety might be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realm
Ephes (Amplifies Bible)    [The purpose is] that through the church the [c]complicated, many-sided wisdom of God in all its infinite variety and innumerable aspects might now be made known to the angelic rulers and authorities (principalities and powers) in the heavenly sphere.
j.                    Though principalities and powers may include demon spirits they are not limited to them.
Tit 3:1  Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
k.                  Verse 10 means that we are to make it known. To do this we must
·        Know the word
·        Know our position in Christ
·        Know what are  and what we have.
j.                    The context shows that is right
Eph 3:11  According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
Eph 3:12  In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him

II.        Paul suffering for the glory of the saints.
Eph 3:13  Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory
CEV version Eph 3:13  That's why you should not be discouraged when I suffer for you. After all, it will bring honor to you.
a.                   This is not a statement that you hear from the prosperity preachers or the name it and claim it brigade.
b.                   I like what Adam Clarke says in his Bible commentary
Eph 3:13
c.                   I desire that ye faint not - In those primitive times, when there was much persecution, people were in continual danger of falling away from the faith who were not well grounded in it. This the apostle deprecates, and advances a strong reason why they should be firm: “I suffer my present imprisonment on account of demonstrating your privileges, of which the Jews are envious: I bear my afflictions patiently, knowing that what I have advanced is of God, and thus I give ample proof of the sincerity of my own conviction. The sufferings, therefore, of your apostles are honorable to you and to your cause; and far from being any cause why you should faint, or draw back like cowards, in the day of distress, they should be an additional argument to induce you to persevere[1]

111.     Pauls Prayer for the Ephesians (Eph 3:13-22)
  1. Paul is not asking for prayer because he is being persecuted but in the mist of his suffering he prays for others
  2. We shall just take a quick look at his prayer but not go into it too deeply
Eph 3:16  That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
Eph 3:17  That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
Eph 3:18  May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
Eph 3:19  And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Eph 3:20  Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
Eph 3:21  Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Examining the book of Ephesians part 9

Studying Chapter 3

Introduction
a.                   Verse one starts of with the adverb ‘therefore’.  Which means it is a continuation of chapter two.
b.                  Paul was in fact suffering for his message.  Paul was not staying in 5 star hotels and travelling first class squandering the money of his ‘partners’ like the prosperity preachers of today.
c.                   Read 12 Corinthians 11:28.
d.                  He was hated by the Jews

I.                    The dispensation of grace
Eph 3:2  If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
The word if here does not imply doubt

If ye have heard. This is not designed to express doubt, but to remind them that they had heard of the dispensation,[1]

International Standard Version Eph 3:2  Surely you have heard about the responsibility of administering God's grace that was given to me on your behalf,
a.                     Dispensation does not mean a specific time person as some erroneously say. But means as the Jamison Fausset and brown  commentary says:
The office of dispensing, as a steward, the grace of God which was (not ‘is’) given me to you-ward,” namely, to dispense to you.[2]
International Standard Version Eph 3:2  Surely you have heard about the responsibility of administering God's grace that was given to me on your behalf, This also mans clear by the Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, which you will find in the notes.

<1,,3622,oikonomia>
primarily signifies "the management of a household or of household affairs" (oikos, "a house," nomos, "a law"); then the management or administration of the property of others, and so "a stewardship," Luke 16:2-4; elsewhere only in the Epistles of Paul, who applies it (a) to the responsibility entrusted to him of preaching the Gospel, 1 Cor. 9:17 (RV, "stewardship," AV, "dispensation"); (b) to the stewardship commited to him "to fulfill the Word of God," the fulfillment being the unfolding of the completion of the Divinely arranged and imparted cycle of truths which are consummated in the truth relating to the Church as the Body of Christ, Col. 1:25 (RV and AV, "dispensation"); so in Eph. 3:2, of the grace of God given him as a stewardship ("dispensation") in regard to the same "mystery;" (c) in Eph. 1:10; 3:9, it is used of the arrangement or administration by God, by which in "the fullness of the times" (or seasons) God will sum up all things in the heavens and on earth in Christ. In Eph. 3:9 some mss. have koinonia, "fellowship," for oikonomia, "dispensation." In 1 Tim. 1:4 oikonomia may mean either a stewardship in the sense of (a) above, or a "dispensation" in the sense of (c). The reading oikodomia, "edifying," in some mss., is not to be accepted. See STEWARDSHIP.
Note: A "dispensation" is not a period or epoch (a common, but erroneous, use of the word), but a mode of dealing, an arrangement, or administration of affairs. Cp. oikonomos, "a steward," and oikonomeo, "to be a steward." [3]
b.                    given me to you-ward’ (Eph 3:2)   this means it was given unto him to give to the Gentiles
c.                     Made known to Paul
Eph 3:3  How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
d.                    It does not say it was only made known to him.
e.                     He says I wrote to you before on this.  This does not mean that there was another Epistle to the Ephesians but rather that he had made mention of early in this epistle.
Eph 1:9  Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
Eph 2:11  Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

II.                  When did Paul receive this revelation:
a.                  we do not know for sure but there is some indication the Bible see 2 Corinthians 12 & Galatians 1:15-18
b.                  The time he actually received it is not important, but what is important is the revelation and wht the revelation was.

III.             Mystery revealed
Eph 3:4  Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
Eph 3:5  Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
Eph 3:6  That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel
a.                   Notice these words in verse 5 ‘not made known’ I like what Adam Clarke’s commentary says on this
Eph 3:5
b.                  Which in other ages was not made known - That the calling of the Gentiles was made known by the prophets in different ages of the Jewish Church is exceedingly clear; but it certainly was not made known in that clear and precise manner in which it was now revealed by the Spirit unto the ministers of the New Testament: nor was it made known unto them at all, that the Gentiles should find salvation without coming under the yoke of the Mosaic law, and that the Jews themselves should be freed from that yoke of bondage; these were discoveries totally new, and now revealed for the first time by the Spirit of God.[4]
Related verses
Col 2:16  Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Rom 14:1  Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.
Rom 14:2  For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
Rom 14:3  Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
Rom 14:4  Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
Rom 14:5  One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
Rom 14:6  He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

c.                   Now revealed Eph 3:5 not just made know to Paul
d.                  This is the mystery
Eph 3:6  That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
e.                   We can see that Paul here is continuing his teaching from chapter two

IV.                   Paul’s ministry

Eph 3:7  Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
Eph 3:8  Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
Eph 3:9  And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ

a.                   Paul was made a minister by God no man, not self made but God made.
Act 9:15  But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
Gal 1:1  Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)
b.                  To preach to the gentiles.
